THE HUNT FOR MYTHIC POWER STARTS WITH STUDENT WRITING

Glass Buffalo literary magazine helps the University of Alberta honour award-winning writers

Edmonton, AB – For the first time, Glass Buffalo literary magazine has released a summer issue. Regularly publishing issues only twice per year in September and March, the summer issue marks a new opportunity for the public to engage, explore, and discover new writers from the University of Alberta (U of A) campus.

All pieces published in the special issue were awarded prizes during the 2013-2014 school year to remarkable students in the Creative Writing program. Prizes were provided through the annual Salter Tea, hosted by the Department of English and Film Studies at the U of A in May. In collaboration with the U of A, Glass Buffalo approached students with the opportunity to publish their fiction, nonfiction, and poetry in a special summer issue.

“We hope that this issue honours the legacy of F.M. Salter—who the award ceremony was named after—as he was the first to establish a Creative Writing course in Canada (at the U of A) and also was an advocate for western writers,” says Editor Matthew Stepanic. “During his time at the U of A, he assisted many of his students, including Rudy Wiebe and W.O. Mitchell, by writing letters to magazine editors demanding that they publish his students.”

In order to bring the most to young and emerging writing talent, Glass Buffalo has also partnered with local businesses within the Downtown Edmonton and Old Strathcona areas to provide free copies to the public. People can follow @GlassBuffalo on Twitter and watch for the hashtag #HuntForMythicPower to find out which local businesses are hosting free copies on what day.

The hunt begins on Friday, July 11, 2014. Copies of this issue and previous ones can also be purchased online and at specific Edmonton retailers, as listed on Glass Buffalo‘s website.
